Marc Mayer
Marc Mayer is Director and CEO of the National Gallery of Canada. Prior to moving to Ottawa in January 2009, he had been Director of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal from September 2005; Deputy Director for Art of the Brooklyn Museum in New York from September 2001; Director of the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery at Harbourfront Center from March 1998 and Curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo from April 1994. Before embarking on his museum career, Marc Mayer was Head of Visual Arts for the Canadian Cultural Center in Paris, France while he was also the Paris correspondent for Rizzoli’s The Journal of Art. From 1985 until 1990 he was the Assistant to the Director, then Assistant Director of 49th Parallel Center for Contemporary Canadian Art in New York City. Marc Mayer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in Art History from McGill University (1984). He is the author of numerous exhibitions and publications concerning such diverse artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Judy Chicago, Stan Douglas, Shirley Wiitasalo, Kim Adams, Candida Hofer, Bill Viola and, most recently, Thomas Nozkowski. A frequent public speaker on the subject of art generally and contemporary art specifically, Mayer is an active member of several professional organizations and is currently Chair of the Public Affairs committee of the Association of Art Museum Directors.
